STUDENT SUPPORT

The University Section Club, Inc. is a 501(c)3 registered non-profit and a recognized support organization for the University of California, Berkeley. Many members want to support UC Berkeley’s students and programs. Cal has one of the highest percentages of low-income students in the nation for a research university. Thanks to fundraising and generous contributions from our members, campus life has improved for disabled students, student parents, students with health needs, veterans, international students, and others. The University Section Club offers several ways to help either financially or through volunteer service.

We do not take grant requests directly from students. Campus counselors and

social workers identify and verify students who fit our guidelines for assistance.

The BEEHIVE is the club's most important annual fundraising event, held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Kensington. Profits fund our Cal student philanthropies. Enjoy a delicious lunch and bid on unique items in the silent auction or buy from the jewelry and collectibles table.

All items donated to University Section Club, Inc. may be deductible for income tax purposes at their present market value.  University Section Club, Inc. does not provide any goods or services in consideration, in whole or in part, for any property contributed.  Estimating the “Fair Market Value” of donated items is the responsibility of the donor.  University Section Club, Inc. Support for Students

Student Grants are awarded on merit. They are given to graduates and undergraduates who are referred by campus staff.  These grants are based on an expectation that a one-time grant will alleviate the student’s unexpected, nonrecurring, financial distress and allow him/her to complete his/her studies.

Services Offered Students (S.O.S.) administers two student-related programs. The “Sylvia Elberg Memorial Fund” provides emergency grants directly to an individual student in great need and who has an unanticipated, non-recurring medical, financial or other emergency. SOS also manages the “Fund for Projects or Equipment” providing funds for programs proposed by campus staff. It is hoped that in most instances these grants will act as seed money to stimulate permanent funding from the University and/or other funding resources.

The University Section Club holds two Endowments. The Section Club I-House Graduate Student Scholarship Fund helps one or two grad students with room and board at I-House. The University Section Club Endowment for Undergraduate Scholarships support need-based undergraduate scholarships.
